Weekly It’s A String Thing tangle challenge held at Tickled to Tangle.

Straight Lines and Other Things

Diva Challenge #368 is to draw a tile with straight lines only. Cool idea! For my tile I decided to focus on Frost Flower by Karry Huen. Stepouts are available here.

As my string I drew five squares, with one on top of the others in the center.  Then I filled each of the squares with Frost Flower and added shading. The result is straight lines going every which way! There isn’t a single curvy line in this tile.

It’s been a busy several days in tangling. This week Adele Bruno is celebrating her It’s A String Thing challenge’s 5th Birthday! To mark the occasion I submitted the following tile:

IAST Happy 5th Birthday
Knightsbridge, Kitl, O, Prestwood

My intention was to add color to this tile. Things didn’t work out according to my vision though. The watercolors caused some of the ink to run, and the gel pens I used were simply too dark. Anyway, luckily I scanned the tile before applying watercolors and was able to send in the black and white version.

One more tile to share in this post. I love rose patterns and had seen Helen Williams’ video on how to draw her pattern Spiral Rose. So of course I wanted to try it out.

I will add color later, but I do think it is very striking in black and white!

Back To Basics

The Diva has returned! This week the challenge (#366) is to go Back to Basics by revisiting several official tangles: Hollibaugh, Meeko, Printemps, and Crescent Moon. It is nice to have the opportunity to return to these very familiar tangle patterns with a fresh eye.

Here is my tile:

Diva Challenge #365
Printemps, Hollibaugh, Crescent Moon, Meeko

I had fun with this tile, and like the effect of filling in the quadrants of the rough diamond shape with the patterns.

Following a similar theme (at least as far as Hollibaugh is concerned) is this week’s “It’s A String Thing” challenge.  In this case, the challenge tangles include Hollibaugh, 7Keys, Sling-Slang, and Diamonte. The goal is to practice layers and fills, utilizing IAST string #259 by Adele Bruno.

My tile appears below.

The surrounding three bands of Sling-Slang, 7Keys, and Diamonte made a nice frame around the Hollibaugh. It was fun to learn the three less familiar patterns.

Thank you for visiting!

It’s A String Thing #153 – Crescent Moon

Entry for IAST #153

After a bit of a hiatus from posting to focus on some other interests – namely submitting designs to VIDA – (as well as attending to my kids who are home for the summer from college), I’m back with a new Zentangle tile. I expect to add some additional challenge tiles soon.

For this week’s “It’s A String Thing” #153, Adele is challenging participants to go back to basics by creating a monotangle featuring the original Zentangle pattern Crescent Moon. The string is a cool “M” shape. For my tile I wanted to have some variations in how the insides of  the shapes were “aura’d”.  I’m pleased with how the shading turned out too.

This week’s string thing challenge #121 is tree themed to mark the occasion of the lighting of the National Christmas tree in Washington,  D.C. The challenge is to create a tile using a triangular tree-shaped string and fill it with the official Zentangle pattern Aquafleur. Adele was inspired by a beautiful Aquafleur tree tangled by CZT Carole Ohl (link).  A step out for Aquafleur (by Maria Thomas) is available here.

“It’s A String Thing” #117 – Sand

My entry for It's A String Thing Challenge #117
My entry for It’s A String Thing Challenge #117

For the “It’s A String Thing” #117 challenge we are to make a monotangle using Adele’s brand new pattern Sand.  Adele has created a specially designed string for this challenge (included in her post). A step out for the pattern Sand is available here.

Sand is a lovely circle grid pattern. I like how versatile this pattern can be. For this challenge I chose to make a grid that covered the entire tile, but tried to vary the styling for each of the “quadrants” indicated by the string. The portion in red is intended to represent the area covered by the circle in the string.

As always, thank you Adele for the opportunity to stretch my tangling skills! I enjoyed trying out Sand, and am pleased with my resulting tile.

“It’s A String Thing” #116 – Candy Corn

After missing several rounds of the “It’s A String Thing” challenge I am back for challenge #116. The theme has to do with Halloween. We are to use TanglePatterns string 095 by Sandra Hart. Appropriately enough the string looks like several candy corns arrayed in different directions. The strings of choice are: Chartz, Cadent, Cracked, and Confettus. Click each text link to be taken to a step out for each of the patterns.

I enjoyed this challenge and liked the Halloween theme of Candy Corn. Thank you Adele for another fun challenge!

“It’s A String Thing” #108

In “It’s A String Thing” challenge #108 we are asked to use string 108 (by CZT Joan Delony) from TanglePatterns. It is a squares within squares sort of string which naturally makes one think of grid patterns. The tangles of choice this time are Cubine, Lanie, Chemystery, and/or Printemps.

The challenge was a lot of fun! I hadn’t drawn Cubine in a while  so it felt good to get back to basics for a bit. Chemystery was new to me (I had seen the pattern before but hadn’t used it in a tangle yet) and I found it interesting to draw. I love the look of Lanie all together so I placed the tangle inside the smallest square. Lastly I used large and small spirally Printemps to form a frame.

My tile for It’s A String Thing 104, with Meringue, Prestwood, and Drupe

It’s another milestone for “It’s A String Thing”! This week (#104) marks the second birthday for the “It’s A String Thing” challenge. Congratulations, and Happy 2nd Birthday!

My entry was completed after the submission deadline for this  challenge,  but I didn’t want to miss out on the celebration. The string was specially designed by Adele Bruno for the occasion. The challenge is to include the following tangles: Drupe by Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts, Meringue by Kelley Kelly, CZT, and Prestwood by Margaret Bremner, CZT.

This week’s It’s A String Thing challenge is to use string 103 by Grace McIntyre from TanglePatterns, and to incorporate tangles Meer, Mi2, and Mr. E.

This challenge proved to be difficult for me. I simply could not figure out how to fit the designated tangles within the curving, spiraling string. Eventually I chose to modify the string a good bit in order to fit in the patterns. I suspect that once the results are posted on Monday I’ll realize that there were all sorts of ways to follow the string that I didn’t see. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20. Anyhow I learned two new tangles this week, and had fun with this tile.

This week’s “It’s A String Thing” challenge celebrates Adele’s husband’s birthday. The challenge was to use String 101, and to incorporate two tangles: Rixty by Maria Thomas (honoring Zentangle co-founder Rick Roberts’ 60th birthday) and LG by Adele Bruno (inspired by her husband, Lou).

My approach with this tile was to distribute the two patterns as evenly as I could across the six major sections created by the string. Another thing that I wanted to do was vary the presentation of the tangles so that each section was distinctive. And the last thing that I did was to add a touch of color.
