Sketch and Watercolor Effect on a Photo

Not long ago I was looking at some of my favorite artistic sites for inspiration. I came across examples of  a technique which creates an effect on a photograph that makes it look like it is partly a drawing (or illustration or sketch). This technique seems to be popular for use in digital scrapbook and art journal layouts, however it could also be used for other purposes like creating lovely fine art prints to hang on your wall. While colorful travel photos work great with this technique, portraits or other types of photos could be used as well.

Textured Vintage Image

I love to collect vintage images for use in my digital artwork. Today I want to show you this pretty vintage teacup image (get it here from the Graphics Fairy) which I modified by adding a texture and other embellishments (resource links below).

The original vintage image has a white background which seemed too plain. So I decided to add a texture. In this case I chose a free texture by Kim Klassen. Visit her blog here to view her lovely textures, both free and paid. You can sign up for her email list and receive updates, information about classes, tutorials, and more.

Father’s Day Challenge Tangle

"It's A String Thing" Challenge Entry #97
“It’s A String Thing” Challenge Entry #97 tangle featuring Umble, Double D’s, Diamonds and Squares, and All About V’s.

This week’s “It’s A String Thing” challenge #97 is just in time for Father’s Day. Patterns of choice include Umble (brand new official tangle), Double D’s, All About V’s, and Diamonds and Squares. The designated string is Father’s Day string by Adele Bruno, CZT — and it spells out Dad!

After completing this tangle I noticed that the central diagonal section resembles a tie. Isn’t that appropriate? Step outs for the patterns can be found at TanglePatterns.com.

New Renaissance Floral Tangle

Renaissance Tile

As a change of pace I decided to post a recent tangle that I drew using a Renaissance tile. I like the effect of the darker tile, sienna ink, and white shadowing. The patterns are Awaysis, Lazy Eights, and Trimond. They go together well I think and create a pretty floral themed tangle.

Step outs for the patterns can be found at TanglePatterns.com.

Bubbles, Orbs and Things

It's A String Thing Challenge #95 Entry
It’s A String Thing Challenge #95 Entry.

This week’s “It’s A String Thing”  (#95) challenged participants to use TanglePatterns String 096 by Sandy Hunter, and to creatively incorporate patterns ‘Nzeppel, Bublz, Onamato, and/or Yincut. Pattern step outs can be found at TanglePatterns.com.

I thought that it would be fun to feature strands of Onamato inside the vertical sides of the string, and then to draw ‘Nzeppel within the top and bottom sides. Lastly I drew a series of bubbles (Bublz) in the center. Unfortunately I didn’t have room to include Yincut.
